The Desire for Significance

By Dave Hess

I believe that the desire to be significant is within everyone. In some people it is a driving motivation for everything. In others this desire lies dormant – all but extinguished – underneath discouragement, criticism and self-hatred.

But regardless of whether a person takes a passive approach toward the pursuit of significance or is actively trying to attain it, everyone wants their life to matter.

The desire to achieve can be great, when it is oriented and driven with the right motivation.

The problem is when we are driven by insecurity or pride. When we try to fill an empty void within us with the applause of others, accumulation of money, or other various accomplishments, they all fail to satisfy.
