Priorities as a Newly Married Man

March 26th, 2009

In the process of reading through the Bible this year I came across Deuteronomy 24:5 today:

“A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married.

Marriage is a wonderful blessing in my life.  I dearly love my wife and value her friendship. Its amazing that we’ve been married for 10 months already, with our one year anniversary right around the corner!

Though, I surely haven’t managed all my time and priorities with perfectly this year, I have tried. More specifically, I have tried over the past ten months to apply the principle of this verse to my own life as a newly married man by limiting the amount of conferences and mission trips and other kinds of travel that I do.

I don’t want to be away “at war” for long times during this first year when my wife needs the assurance of my foremost commitment and love for her. I know this first year is especially important to lay a healthy foundation for our marriage, and I really want to do it right. With God’s help, I think we are off to a great start so far, but I need His grace to be a good Christian and good husband.

Priorities are tough to maintain, and sometimes it’s really hard to say no, but in certain situations, that’s what obedience requires.

Being Married is Awesome!

June 6th, 2008

Tomorrow marks three weeks since the day I pledged my heart to the girl I love! It has been absolutely AMAZING so far.

After a beautiful ceremony and reception spent with all the people that we love the most – much thanks to Katie’s parents for all that – we headed out on a two week honeymoon. I am so glad for this restful and exciting time to get to recover from the intensity of the months of planning and preparation amid our already busy lives.

Katie is all that I ever could have hoped for in a wife. I am so glad that God has joined us together, and I am absolutely LOVING being married to her. She is sweet and kind, intelligent, funny and considerate. I praise God for bringing such an amazing partner to me. Together we will experience all of life’s joys and sorrows.

I see so clearly now the importance of the foundations God laid in my life as a single man. The years of character building are worth their weight in gold.

In many ways, I really liked being single, pursuing God and advancing His Kingdom. That season was great while it was the center of God’s will for my life, but now I’m in a new season. Still passionately pursuing Jesus, but now with a spouse.

I love Katie, and I love being married. Praise God who gives all good gifts. This is certainly the most valuable gift he has ever given me outside of the gift of Himself.

What are you most thankful for at this stage of your life?
