5 Tension Points

December 14th, 2008

rubber-band-ballI wanted to conclude my three part series on the Every Nation Winter Conference by highlighting Pastor Steve Murrell’s message on the Five Tension Points in our ministry.

He used the illustration of a rubber band, which went something like this….

If a rubber band is to be shot across the room it requires a build up of tension and then a release. There are two dangers… 1. Not enough tension… 2. Too much tension.

If there is not enough tension then the rubber band doesn’t go anywhere. It simple falls to the ground, or doesn’t go very far when you try to shoot it. On the other hand, if there is too much tension, the rubber band will snap. In order for it to shoot across the room the way you intend it to there has to be the right amount of tension.

Pastor Steve listed the tension points within the Every Nation movement as follows:

1. Ministry & Family

2. Unity & Diversity

3. Local & International

4. Church & Campus

5. Established Leaders & Emerging Leaders

If we are just doing one or the other in these paired emphases of our movement (ie. Church & Campus), we have no tension at all in that area. If we are pushing too hard in both emphases at the same time there can be too much tension and something will eventually snap! Healthy tension is somewhere in between the extremes of neglect and overextending.

This consideration of healthy tension points, along with the illustraion of a rubber band was very helpful to me. In the past I have thought in terms of having a “healthy balance“, but I think that “tension” is a much more accurate and helpful term for discussing this issue.

Are there any of these “5 tension points”  that you feel is actually not in a healthy tension in your personal life or ministry context?

Does anyone on your ministry team feel that there is not healthy tension in these areas? What should you do about it?

The Measure of Success in Ministry

December 12th, 2008

Last week at the Every Nation Winter Conference for campus ministers and church leaders in the Every Nation movement. One of the conference sessions featured a panel discussion on “The Measure of Success in Ministry”.  - A great topic, especially for someone like me who has the Achiever theme in his top five of Strength Finders.

Here are a few of the highlights from that session:

- “Real success has a lot to do with the purity that’s in your heart and the clarity in your head.” (Kevin York)

- “‘The Lord is my shepherd’, not ‘The pastor is my shepherd.’”

- “Don’t allow the grace of God to fool you into thinking that you’re better than you are.” (Jim Lafoon)

- “As a young pastor my greatest mistake was counseling too much and discipling too little.” (Jim Lafoon)

- “Multi-tasking [may make for high organizational productivity but it] makes for terribly poor relationships with God and with other people.” (Jim Lafoon)

- “I don’t want to grow [my church numerically] past my character.” (Russ Austin)

- “Influence has more longevity than authority.”

- “Most people don’t want a vision so much as they want significance.”

Some pretty good leadership insights, in my opinion! Which one stands out to you?

…My next and final post on the EN Winter Conference will recap Steve Murrell’s message on Five Tension Points in our ministry.

EN Winter Conference

December 11th, 2008

wonderful_life2This past week I attended the Every Nation Winter Conference in Jacksonville, FL. This was really a great time of re-connecting with old ministry friends, and of being refreshed with the vision and purpose of why God has brought us together in this movement.

The theme of the conference was “It’s a Wonderful Life”, based off of the classic Christmas movie. At the conference were many of the speakers you might expect to hear at an Every Nation Conference including David Houston, Brett Fuller, Jim Lafoon, Kevin York and Steve Murrell.

Though there were some different topics and communication approaches at this conference.  However, there were some different topics addressed and several panel discussions including senior leaders of Every Nation churches.

Here are a few of my big take-aways from the the Marriage/Family Q & A Panel Discussion:

- “Discipleship in the home should happen naturally if you are transparent.”

- “Don’t speak ill of other people in your kids presence. You don’t want to poison your children to other people by your speech in your house.”

- “If you fight too hard with your wife she will begin to shut down and you won’t receive all [the counsel, advice and wisdom] you need to receive from her.”

…helpful, I think so.

I really appreciated the excellent hospitality and warm welcome extended by Pastor Russ Austin, who hosted the conference at his church, Southpoint Community Church

In my next post I’ll highlight some of the points made during the panel discussion on ” The Measure of Success in Ministry”…
